Feeding your dog a raw diet is gaining popularity fast, especially among UK pet owners looking for a more natural, tailored approach to nutrition. But with so much conflicting advice online, it’s hard to know what’s legit and what’s hype. Whether you’re raw-curious or ready to commit, here’s everything you need to know about raw dog food in the UK.

What is Raw Dog Feeding?

Raw dog feeding is exactly what it sounds like: feeding your dog uncooked, unprocessed food that mimics what their ancestors might have eaten in the wild. Think raw meat, bones, organs, fruits, and vegetables. It’s designed to reflect a more biologically appropriate diet rather than relying heavily on processed commercial kibble.

Types of raw feeding

Raw feeding can be tailored to your dog’s needs, which is what makes it so perfect for every dog. The main types of raw are

1. 80/10/10 minces

It typically includes:

  • 80% muscle meat
  • 10% bone
  • 10% organ (with 5% being liver)

No fruits, veggies, or supplements are added unless your dog has specific health issues (ie senior dogs would require more omega 3 than a 2 year old dog to aid joint health). This diet is extremely easy and things like fish, eggs and goats milk can easily be added, for more variety and for extra nutrition for your dog. 2. Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF)

BARF diet tends to include vegetables and fruits, eggs. A typical BARF meal might consist of:

  • 70% meat
  • 10% bone
  • 10% organ
  • 10% plant matter and extras

Raw feeding vs. kibble

Kibble is convenient, cheap, and shelf-stable. However, it’s also processed at high temperatures, which strips nutrients.

All these nutrients listed on the pack is BEFORE the heat process. Legally they don’t have to list whats in the kibble after processing. (Mad I know, but that’s the pet industry for you!)
Many kibble formulas contain grains, fillers, and artificial preservatives. Its like McDonalds for dogs!

Raw feeding, on the other hand, is closer to a dog’s ancestral diet. It can help improve health and vitality. If not handled correctly, however, it can lead to safety and balance issues. Hence why we are hear to guide you every step of the way on your raw feeding journey.

Is Raw Feeding Safe in the UK?

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) regulates the production of raw pet food through strict hygiene and safety standards. Commercial raw dog food must be processed in approved facilities and tested for pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli. To ensure your pet’s safety, look for suppliers registered with the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) or approved by DEFRA.

Did you know? In 2023 and 2024 there have been more recalls of Dried Kibble than Raw food for cases of Salmonella

Benefits of Raw Feeding

Here’s why so many pet owners are making the switch to raw dog food in the UK:

1. Improved coat and skin condition

Many raw-fed dogs develop shinier coats, reduced dandruff, and healthier skin. Omega-3s and natural oils in raw meat help nourish their skin from the inside out.

2. Better dental health

Gnawing on raw, meaty bones helps scrape off plaque and tartar. This often results in fresher breath and fewer trips to the vet for dental work.

3. Smaller, less smelly stools

Raw food is more digestible than kibble, so dogs produce smaller, firmer, and less pungent poop. This means less waste and less mess.

4. Tailored nutrition and weight management

Raw feeding allows you to adjust your dog’s meals based on age, weight, activity level, and health conditions. It’s great for managing allergies, obesity, and food sensitivities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about raw dog food in the UK? Check out the information below:

Can I feed raw and kibble together?

Technically, yes, but it’s controversial. Kibble and raw digest at different speeds, which some claim may cause stomach upset. Instead of mixing, we suggest sticking to raw dog food to avoid issues with your dog. Also some dogs with deep chests (Dobermans, Rotties, Ridgebacks, Grey Hounds, Great Danes etc) can have extra complications when mixing Kibble and Raw so therefore we suggest a complete swap rather than mixing.

What raw bones are safe in the UK?

Stick with soft, edible bones like chicken necks, duck wings, and lamb ribs. Avoid weight-bearing bones from large animals (such as beef leg bones), which can splinter or break teeth.

Never feed cooked bones. They’re brittle and dangerous.

Is frozen raw better than fresh?

Frozen raw food is safer and more practical. It kills off parasites and extends shelf life. Fresh is fine if used quickly and handled carefully, but most UK raw feeders stick to frozen.

How do I store raw food safely?

Keep raw meals in airtight containers. Store in the freezer and defrost in the fridge. Use thawed food within two to three days. Clean all surfaces and tools after use.
